Cognitive Vaccine
A vaccine does not keep the virus out. It introduces a weak, harmless version in advance, so that when the real one arrives, the defences are already built.
The same trick works on the mind. Show someone a small, weakened sample of manipulation — a mild advertisement, a softened piece of propaganda, a half-strength sales pitch — and explain the trick inside it. Later, when the full-strength version arrives, they spot it. They have been inoculated.
This is why the best defence against being misled is not shielding yourself from every bad argument. It is meeting bad arguments early, in safe doses, with their machinery labelled.
Parents and teachers, take note: the child who has never met a persuasive lie is not protected. He is unvaccinated. Give him the weakened dose — the fairytale with the wolf, the advertisement dissected at the dinner table — and let his defences grow.
