Paris Hilton Effect

Fame used to be the shadow of achievement — the scientist, the general, the artist became known because of what they had done. Then a reversal appeared: some people became famous for being famous, and their fame, being visible, attracted more fame. Celebrity became self-fuelling, detached from any deed.

The mechanism is pure attention economics. Notice is a currency that pays interest to whoever already holds it. Cameras follow the photographed; the photographed are photographed because cameras follow them. Nothing is being rewarded but reward itself.

The effect matters beyond gossip pages, because it quietly rewrites ambition. A generation watching this concludes that being seen is the achievement — that the shadow is the substance.

The correction is to keep the two ledgers separate in your own mind: what is this person known for, and what did they do? Fame is the trail; the deed is the walk. In your own work, keep walking. Trails fade. The walk is the only part that was ever real.
