Volume 7 · The Long Afternoon · Essay 40
Choice Architecture
Choice Architecture is a small handle on a large fact. Grip it, and the fact becomes easier to carry.
Strip it to the floor and you find an old instruction: look carefully, judge slowly, act decently. The new name exists because the old instruction keeps being forgotten.
What this concept offers is a pause — one extra beat between what happens and what you do about it. Civilisation, someone said, is measured in that beat.
Watch the woman lighting the evening lamp in a small flat after a hard day. Nobody taught her that ritual builds a floor under the falling feeling. She simply knows.
In the end, life asks only whether we were awake while it happened. A word is a lamp. This one is now yours to carry.
